ISO 44000 Diagnostic - ICW Trial
Evaluating the principles of successful collaborative business relationship management (CBRM)
ISO 44000 sets out 12 high level Principles which express the things that matter in collaborative business relationship management.
If all you want is a list of the ISO 44000 Principles, more information is available here.

Value Codes
Making ISO 44000 measuarable
The twelve ISO 44000 Principles distil out the things that matter in CBRM. However, on their own, high level principles aren’t directly measurable or actionable.
To develop a shared understanding and objective measurement of the Principles, NIP has transformed them into 22 Value Codes: discrete areas, mapped to and from the Principles, with a set of specific scoring statements for each that clearly and progressively articulates the steps toward ‘what good looks like’.
Measuring Value Codes in a diagnostic helps clarify the present state, surface any perception differences and account for value (and waste).
Value Codes translate the high level aspirations (represented by the ISO 44000 Principles) into practical improvement activities. They may also be used to establish a common language for effective communication; form a shared agenda; increase mutual understanding; motivate towards desired future states, and show how to get there.
Value Code Mappings
Each Value Code in this diagnostic was derived from (and is referenced back to) over 80 methodologies, standards and sources of best practice.
Through the mapping process, Value Code assessment reports can be used to indicate levels of conformance to various standards (including ISO 44001), and point to specific sources of potential guidance.
Deploying the ISO 44000 diagnostic
As well as providing a value-adding opportunity in its own right, every diagnostic can also function as part of a wider and more comprehensive solution for addressing a specific situation - what we call a "Journey". The ISO 44000 diagnostic therefore frequently refers to “the parties”, and is particularly suited to being part of the following complementary "journeys":
- Capability Development: improve collaborative capability and best practice in supply chains, allowing organisations who may have already used ISO 440001 to use ISO 44000 to start spreading, scaling and embedding those skills in their supply chain in an approachable and actionable manner.
- Performance Management: connect the ISO44000 principles to issues currently faced on the ground, and use the principles to assess and improve day-to-day performance and address "hot button" issues in particular collaborative projects.
These Journeys both feature the ISO 44000 diagnostic being completed from the different perspectives of the involved parties it mentions and, as needed, can also involve other components necessary to address the specific situation - related interactive reporting, online learning environments, supporting consultancy, etc.
Trialling the ISO 44000 diagnostic
We suggest you keep these Journeys in mind when completing the diagnostic, but, to keep things simple to begin with, this trial assumes you will be capturing your individual perspective on the collaborative capabilities within your own organisation. References to “the parties” in the diagnostic can therefore be thought of as relating to the different groups within your organisation involved in collaborative working. The diagnostic will:
- show you the specific areas (Value Codes) that create value (and incur waste) in collaborative business relationships
- demonstrate how to measure the things that matter in collaborative business relationships
- immediately generate a report (that you can print and share) that:
- provides a graphical summary of your response, including how the Value Codes and your scores map to the ISO 44000 principles
- highlights areas of strength and opportunities for improvement
- captures in detail your perception on the things that matter (including any supporting comments you have made about where you want to be and how you plan to get there)
The report you will receive from the Example Capability Assessment will include mappings to the ISO 44000 Principles.
Mappings to ISO 44001 (and other standards) are not included in this diagnostic's report, but may be included in the other diagnostics within a Journey.
Your response will be securely stored and password protected so you can access it at any time (you will be asked to set a password before you begin).
